The Xiamen section of a new expressway linking Xiamen and Chengdu, provincial capital of southwest China¡¯s Sichuan Province, will start construction next month or the beginning of 2010, according to the project department of the Xiamen-Chengdu Expressway.
The Xiamen section, involving an investment of 4.9 billion yuan, will be 18 kilometers long and has a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The whole project is expected to be completed and open to traffic in 2013.
Upon completion, it will be a main passageway linking the interior and the island of Xiamen. The transport distance between Haicang bonded port area and Hunan, Sichuan provinces will be shortened by 500 kilometers.
In addition, the expressway will be another convenient and fast passage linking Xiamen and Zhangzhou¡¯s Changtai, a small county famous for its tourist industry such as the Mayang River Kayaking. By then, It will take only 30 minutes driving from Xiamen to Changtai.
The travel time from Xiamen to Chengdu by this new expressway will be shortened to 25 hours compared to the previous 3.5 days.
