[sports]Chinese Sport Delegation Visits Ithaca College

ITHACA, NY¡ªA delegation from China¡¯s Chengdu Sport University is currently on the Ithaca College campus to discuss collaborations between the two institutions. The April 23¨C26 visit is being coordinated by Hongwei Guan, assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education in Ithaca College¡¯s School of Health Sciences and Human Performance.
Chengdu Sport University (CSU) was the first college in China to establish a sports-oriented English Department, aiming to support the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games by providing translators and interpreters. Established in 1942, CSU is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. With over 15,000 undergraduate, graduate and adult education students enrolled in a variety of sport-related academic programs, it also has one of the country¡¯s premiere sports hospitals and sports injury research centers.
The visiting delegation includes Quansheng Su, vice president of CSU; Linlin Cheng, dean of Sport Management and Economics; Lerong Hou, dean of Sport Medicine; Shuhui Sun, deputy director; and Hao Fu, lecturer and interpreter.
In the summer of 2006, Guan made a visit to CSU along with Steve Siconolfi, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, and John Wolohan, chair of the Department of Sport Management and Media. They will be returning in May as part of a course titled Exploring Rehabilitation and Health Promotion in China. Ithaca College students from various health-related disciplines will explore the Chinese philosophy, methods and systems of rehabilitation and health promotion at national and regional levels. In addition, students will participate in cultural events to help set the Chinese philosophy in perspective.
¡°The collaboration will create a unique opportunity for our students and faculty,¡± said Guan. ¡°In addition to the cultural exposure and global learning experience, Ithaca students will learn the theories of the Meridian System and traditional Chinese medicine, and will have the opportunity to observe the practice in the affiliated sports hospital.¡±
