Beijing - China plans to send two giant pandas to Spain, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday while King Juan Carlos was visiting the Asian country.
Qin Gang said Beijing hoped the panda pair would serve as 'friendly ambassadors that would promote the friendship between both countries.'
Details about the agreement that would send the endangered animals to a Spanish zoo were not announced, but Foreign Ministry officials said its pandas are now only loaned out.
Meanwhile, Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia visited the southern city of Chengdu on the fifth day of their six-day visit, which has also taken in Beijing and Shanghai.
The royal couple are visiting as the highlight of Year of Spain observances in China, which are focusing on art, sport, education and business.
The royal delegation included 250 business leaders, and the king spoke at a Beijing business seminar.
Trade between China, the fourth largest economy in the world, and Spain, the eighth largest, amounted to 20 billion dollars last year.
